Fonseca Guimaraens, often simply called Fonseca, is one of the largest Port wine houses in Portugal. Manoel Pedro Guimaraens established the company in 1822 when he acquired control of the Fonseca and Monteiro company from the Fonseca family by purchase of the majority of Fonseca owned shares.

Ageing Period: Aged for 24 months in oak casks and then in bottles for about a decade until it reaches maturity. "The 2008 Guimaraens Vintage Port is not a re-release; it has been in the marketplace, but it is a new submission for us. It comes in with 97.4 grams of sugar and 20.3% alcohol. This is pretty intense. Tight and tannic still, this is a very focused Port with fine intensity of flavor and powerful aromatics. "The 1991 Guimaraens is the most impressive bottle I have tasted of this offering. The opaque purple color, and sweet, copious aromas of cassis, licorice, and flowers, are followed by a supple.

Guimaraens 1998 Vintage Port has ripe raspberry and cherry jam aromas, with lovely aromatic dimension. Vibrant berry fruit flavours.

Fonseca- Guimaraens is the second wine of Fonseca. It comes from the same quintas as Fonseca but is made in less good years. However, Guimaraens was a Port wine house long before 1952 when its modern ‘second’ label to Fonseca was established and vintage exists with that name.

Vibrant berry fruit flavours. The 1998 Port vintage was tiny and inconsistent but there were arguably some gems. A cool, wet winter and spring led to a poor budburst and gave way to an unusually hot summer. These conditions were ripe for the spread of powdery mildew which significantly cut yields.

Fonseca is a Port house renowned for consistency in quality and the lush, exotic style of its vintage releases. Encompassing three quintas across the Douro region, the house makes a variety of styles, ranging from the reserve ruby, Bin 27, to white ports and Tawny ports of various ages.
